SANGUIGNA

In this series, I try to reimagine classical nude studies through a contemporary lens, employing traditional sanguigna technique alongside the unconventional use of coffee as a medium. This approach creates a dialogue between classical and contemporary art while exploring themes of beauty, inclusivity, and sensuality. The series pays homage to Ingres' mastery while challenging traditional beauty standards through modern representation.

Coffee and Sanguigna on Watercolor Paper
2018

This large-scale nude study masterfully combines sanguigna (red chalk) with coffee washes on premium watercolor paper. The figure commands the composition, her form deliberately filling the entire pictorial space with a powerful physical presence. This intentional use of space transforms the classical nude study into a statement of corporeal power and uncompromising sensuality. The body's mass becomes almost architectural in its dominance of the frame, while maintaining an intimate, introspective quality through the subject's pose.

The figure emerges from and dissolves into the warm coffee-toned background, creating a sense of organic unity. The use of coffee transcends mere visual effect, adding an olfactory dimension that connects the viewer to earth and nature. The dripping effects and subtle variations in the coffee's tone create a contemporary feeling while the classical sanguigna technique grounds the work in artistic tradition. Through this harmonious blend of traditional technique and innovative material choice, the work achieves both monumental presence and sensual intimacy, challenging conventional representations of the female form while celebrating its inherent power and beauty.
